4x400-Meter Relay Finishes Sixth in Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG, Va. –  UNCW women's indoor track & field concluded its weekend at the Doc Hale Invitational at Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon. The 4x400-meter relay of Janiyah Fields, Mackenzie Townsend, Grace Guilford and Ella Jane Osada posted a time of 3 minutes, 52.48 seconds, earning sixth place to wrap up the meet.

"I'm proud of the way we are competing right now," head coach Jeff Klaves said. "The most important thing that we're trying to do is get competitive reps, and coming up here to Virginia Tech, we did just that. I'm proud of our results, and I look forward to continuing to build on these going into Liberty and the CAA Indoor Championship."

After winning the 4x400 at the Brant Tolsma Invitational two weeks ago, the members of the 4x400 continued their success with another strong race, posting the eighth-fastest indoor time in program history. The 4x400 has rewritten the program's indoor top 10 list three time this season, including the fourth-best time in Seahawk history.  "I am proud of the resilience of the relay. Today we had Grace (Guilford), step up as an alternate, joining the "A" squad. Nothing but great efforts from everyone today. We fought hard from the beginning to the end of the race."

Junior Brylee Montanari started the competition on Friday, recording a time of 9.25 seconds in the 60 hurdles. "Brylee continues to do things at practice that we know is just a matter of time until that comes through at a competition. I look forward to seeing her continue to be competitive."

In the 400-meter dash on Friday night, senior Nasiah Ferguson recorded a time of 56.76 while Townsend, a fifth-year, ran 58.32.

On Saturday afternoon, Fields, a senior, finished in the top half of the field with a time of 25.07 in the 200-meter dash. Avery Rueckert, a sophomore, ran 25.67.

"Great competitive races in the open. We are continuing to sharpen our win-or-learn mentality. We're leaving this meet with a lot of winning parts of our races. We will look to refine our race model and target the spots where we can make our moves leading up to the Indoor Championships."

The Seahawks head back to Lynchburg, Va. for the Darius Dixon Invitational at Liberty University on Feb. 14-15.
