VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – UNCW women's track and field wrapped up the Coastal Athletic Association Indoor Championships on a high note as the 4x400-meter relay of Janiyah Fields, Mackenzie Townsend, Ella Jane Osada and Nasiah Ferguson ran 3 minutes, 46.60 seconds, posting their fastest time of the season to finish fifth while setting the third-fastest time in program history.
"Today we had four complete efforts and four outstanding legs that produced a season-best in the 4x400m relay," head coach Jeff Klaves said. "Every relay always has a story, building trust between that group to put a result together at the conference championships. Each time we have a team competing in the relay, we're competing to win. It's all about resilience, and we will fight until the end."
The relay team rewrote the program's top 10 list five different times this season. The Seahawks' best time of the season is highlighted by a gutsy effort from one of their senior leaders.
"In her 400-meter final, Nasiah rolled her ankle in warmups, tried to run, and did not finish the race. She received treatment and was approved by the medical staff to be able to run the relay. She came back and had a great anchor leg to help us win our heat. I'm proud and thankful for the competitive spirit that we keep promoting. We did everything we could to win our heat, and we're excited to be able to take these lessons heading into the outdoor season."
"I want to say a huge thank you to our four seniors from this indoor team, Janiyah Fields, Nasiah Ferguson, Amanda Ruffin and Mackenzie Townsend, coming back for her fifth and final year. Just an outstanding group that has helped create the culture that we're so proud of today. We appreciate all the time and effort you have put in. You truly all are leaving a legacy of hard work and what that work can lead to."
Junior Brylee Montanari became the Seahawks' second point scorer at the championships, finishing sixth place in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.86, earning three points.
"Brylee had a great race in her first-ever CAA final. She came in ranked 10th, finished sixth, and scored three big team points for us. I'm proud of the races she put together. The future is bright for our hurdles squad, building around Brylee."
The Seahawks finished the meet with 10 points, getting four from the 4x400 and three from Emma Crozier-Carole (pentathlon) and Montanari (60 hurdles). UNCW will kick off the outdoor season at home with the Seahawk Invitational on March 7-8.
"The work the athletes are putting in is paying off. We're excited to start the outdoor season on Senior Day, have our alumni social, and induct our newly appointed class of 2025 Hall of Fame members. Nothing like a home-field advantage to kick things off."
