Five Gold Medals Carry UNCW In Championship Leads

HAMPTON, Va. – Powered by a combined five gold medal finishes, UNCW moved to the top of both the men's and women's standings on Thursday at the Coastal Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at the Hampton Aquaplex.

The Seahawk men grabbed the lead with an impressive effort and carry a 287.5-268 lead over Delaware going into Friday. The women, meanwhile, lead Delaware, 476-444, following three gold medal victories.

The UNCW performance of the night came in the women's 400 Medley Relay as UNCW claimed gold with a meet and school record time. The relay of Maeren McGonigal, Gil Shaw, Cameron Snowden and Emily Waite combined for a time of 3:35.16. In the opening leg of the race, McGonigal set a program record with a time of 54.02 seconds in the 100 Back, breaking a record that stood for 10 years.

William Carrico gave UNCW its first gold medal of the session with a win in the 500 Free. He posted an NCAA B cut time and personal best time of 4:19.83, which ranks him second all-time at UNCW.

Maeren McGonigal continued her strong rookie campaign with UNCW's second gold coming in the 200 IM. Her time of 1:58.98 was a school and freshman record as well as an NCAA B cut mark. McGonigal is the first Seahawk woman in program history to post a sub 2:00.00 time.

Jacob Duracinsky gave the Seahawks a sweep of the 200 IM event with a gold of his own in the men's race.

Cameron Snowden, the league's top returner in the 50 Free, delivered gold while posting a school record and NCAA B cut time of 22.26 seconds. That time was .08 seconds faster than Evan Arsenault's then-school-record mark of 22.34.

The men's 400 Medley Relay also got in on the school-record setting fun when Jack VanHowe, Mason Hetzell, Dave Fitch and Shaw Satterfield chalked up a time of 3:09.21.

Adding medals for the Seahawks were Mason Hetzell (Bronze,200 IM), Mac Russell (Bronze, 50 Free), Makenna Sharpe (Bronze, 3-meter), Men's 400 Medley Relay (Bronze)

The third day of the championship begins at 10 a.m. on Friday with the swimming prelims. Diving prelims for the men's 3-meter board starts at 12:30 p.m. and the day's finals session gets underway at 6 p.m.
