WBB Fan Guide: Stony Brook

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW women's basketball returns to Trask Coliseum for a Coastal Athletic Association contest against Stony Brook on Sunday at 1 p.m. to celebrate the Play4Kay Game. The game will be streamed on FloCollege. 95.9 The Breeze will be carrying the audio stream. UNCW erased an eight-point third-quarter deficit and held Hofstra scoreless for over four minutes in the fourth quarter to rally past the Pride in overtime, 70-67. The Seahawks snapped an eight-game winless streak against Hofstra and remained unbeaten in overtime games this season (4-0). UNCW outscored Hofstra 40-30 in points in the paint. The Seahawks capitalized on 18 points off turnovers while holding Hofstra to four. Friday night was the highest-attended Coastal Athletic Association home game for UNCW in five seasons as 938 fans were in attendance for National Girls & Women in Sports Day.

Ali Zelaya scored in double figures for the sixth straight game and notched her third consecutive double-double with a career-high 22 points to go with 13 rebounds. Zelaya's 22 points are the most in a game by a Seahawk this season. Tia Dobson delivered career-highs with 16 points and eight assists, the most by a Seahawk in three seasons. Dobson also had four steals and tallied at least four in a game for the third time this season.

Evan Miller scored 12 points in the victory against Hofstra on Friday night, moving into eighth all-time in program history with 111 career three-pointers surpassing Denise Marsh (1992-96). Miller is third in program history with 125 games played. The program record for games played is 126. She will tie the program record held by Treasure Johnson and Martha White (both played at UNCW from 2007-11) in the game against Stony Brook. Miller is on pace to break the program record at Delaware on Feb. 7. 

Zelaya is among the nation's best in three defensive stat categories. The graduate transfer is 16th in defensive rebounds per game (7.6), 19th in blocks (43), and 28th in blocks per game with 2.05. She ranks 15th all-time in program history for blocked shots as a Seahawk. Zelaya is also leading the conference in rebounds (192). Zelaya needs nine more points to reach 400 for her career. Since the program's inception, 399 double-doubles have been recorded. 

Taylor Henderson has scored 669 points in 50 career games (13.4 PPG). Henderson nearly had a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds against the Pride. She also surpassed 300 career rebounds against Hofstra Henderson is also 10 steals away from 100 for her career. 

Jania Hall needs 41 points to reach 1,000 for her career. Hall was the CAA's Sixth Player of the Year at Monmouth last season and moved to the bench eight games ago for UNCW. Since the switch, Hall has scored in double figures five times. Hall reached 200 points on the season against Hofstra. She is averaging 10 points per game over her last eight to lead the second unit.

Stony Brook leads the all-time series, 3-1. UNCW defeated the Seawolves in 2009 and will look to snap a three-game skid to Stony Brook in CAA play.

SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES

The Seawolves are in the middle of the pack of the conference standings with a 5-3 record in CAA play. Stony Brook dropped a 66-53 decision at Charleston on Friday night. Breauna Ware posted a game-high 21 points with six rebounds, shooting 10-of-15 from the foul line. Zaida Gonzalez, the CAA's second-leading scorer with 16.6 points per game, added 16 points. Shamarla King finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. Stony Brook ranks 10th in the nation in three-point percentage defense (24.8) and 16th with 13.5 fouls per game. Gonzalez leads the CAA with 319 field goal attempts.

LOOKING AHEAD

UNCW travels to Delaware to take on the Blue Hens on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Hens have a 37-10 edge in the all-time series, including a 20-3 record at home. The Seahawks are looking to snap a nine-game winless streak against Delaware since 2020. UNCW is looking for its first road win against Delaware since 2008.
