WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW's Taylor Anthony and Carly McCusker were the Seahawks' men's and women's cross country top finishers in the fourth annual Beach Blast 5K contested at nearby Olsen Park on Friday evening.
Campbell swept both the men's and women's races with the Seahawks men's and women's programs each earning a third-place finish in their season opener.
McCusker clocked a 19:45.8 time to finish fourth among 48 contests in the women's 5K. Anthony placed fifth in the men's 5K with a 16:09.8 time.
Anthony was one of three UNCW men's distance runners to finish in the top 11. Joining the Greenville, N.C., product were Sam Bland (8th – 16:21.9) and Nicholas Potter (11th – 16:29.2).
Sophomore Claire Carmichael placed 13th in the women's race at 20:13.2.
The Seahawks also hosted Campbell, Meredith (women's only), NC Central, Presbyterian, Winston-Salem State and the NC State Club Track Team.
UNCW is idle until it travels to race at the adidas XC Challenge hosted by NC State on Sept. 20 in Raleigh, N.C.
