Women's Tennis Signs Local Standout

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW head women's tennis coach Hans Olsen has announced the addition of Sophia Catino to the program for the 2025-26 season.

Catino, who is a hometown product from New Hanover High School, won the state 4A Doubles Championship in 2024. She's a four-time All-State selection and honored as the Mideastern Conference Player four times.

"UNCW women's tennis is excited to welcome Wilmington native, Sophia Catino to our 2025 tennis team," said Olsen. "We have been fortunate to get to know Sophia over the years and have always been impressed with how she combines her enjoyment of the game with her determination and strong work ethic.  Sophia competes at the highest level of national tournaments and has always done a great job representing Wilmington with class. Along with being a great player, Sophia also connected well with our players. She has an infectious smile and brings a positive energy that will fit in great with our current team."

As a sophomore, she helped New Hanover to the finals of the 4A State Championship tournament.

Catino has won a program-record 139 matches for the Wildcats and went undefeated in singles and doubles last season.

"Growing up in Wilmington and being a Seahawk fan from the beginning makes me so excited to be a part of such an incredible culture and team!" said Catino.

Catino is a four-star recruit, ranked in the top 10 in North Carolina and 214th nationally.
