Indoor T&F Opens Season at Clemson Opener

CLEMSON, South Carolina – The UNCW women's indoor track and field program opened its 2024-25 season at the Clemson Opener on Friday at the Clemson University Indoor Track.

The Seahawks, who competed in the first of six indoor meets on the 2024-25 docket, began this season's journey with eight top-10 finishes at Clemson, including a fifth-place showing by the 4x400 team of Janiyah Fields, Nasiah Ferguson, Ella Jane Osada and Mackenzie Townsend.

"We have a team-first mentality when it comes to the relay," said UNCW Head Coach Jeff Klaves. "We are trying to drive not just having four capable runners, but having depth from anywhere between six to eight athletes that can give us a chance on any day to win that relay."

The 4x400 squad's 3:50.49 time was four seconds faster than their season-opening time at last year's Clemson Opener.  "Today was the team's opportunity to get better and they took advantage of it.  Our philosophy is rooted in process over outcome.  When results like this happen, it is because we are stacking the right things together rep by rep, day by day and meet by meet."

Ferguson narrowly missed her own school record by .09 seconds with a 39.42 time in the women's 300 meters while Ella Jane's 41.12 time was good for sixth all-time on UNCW's all-time leaderboard in the event.

"Two standout performances I'd like to highlight are Brylee Montanari who ran 8.89 in the 60m Hurdles, just off her all-time best of 8.82, and Janiyah Fields 24.66 in the 200m Dash, just off her all-time best of 24.50," said Klaves. "In opening meets like this, to start a season where you left off last year is a huge win."

Other highlights include sophomore Summer Herbertson's second-place finish in the one mile with a 5:13.01 time followed by fellow second-year Claire Carmichael in third place.  "Fresh off cross country, the women's distance runners did a great job working back down to the speed aspect of track."

"The best part in all of this was getting a competitive opportunity as a team across the board.  We are excited to take what we learned back to practice and keep building on this start.  Our leaders are leading, and our newcomers are learning, great start to build on moving forward."

UNCW returns to action at the Dick Taylor Challenge hosted by North Carolina on Jan. 18.
