Down But Not Out, Volleyhawks Rally For Win

UNCW trained Elon 2-0, but rallied for a 3-2 win on Sunday

ELON, N.C. – Trailing 2-0 and staring at its first Coastal Athletic Association loss of the season, UNCW rallied to win the final three sets and upend Elon, 3-2 (14-25, 18-25, 34-32, 25-18, 15-12), on Sunday in volleyball action at the Schar Center.

The Seahawks (7-7) remained perfect at 4-0 in the league and took possession of first place with the win. Elon fell to 0-4 in the CAA and 4-9 overall. UNCW last opened conference play at 4-0 in 1988, when the Seahawks went 4-1 in just the third season of CAA volleyball.

Junior middle Grace Melnick posted a double-double with a career-high tying 13 kills and a UNCW rally-scoring era record 13 total blocks. Melnick recorded back-to-back blocks in the final set to give UNCW a 13-10 lead.

Belle Schall, a senior setter, also recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 13 digs.

Senior libero Jadyn Barry held match-high honors with a season-high 25 digs.

Six different Seahawks had at least seven kills in the match as UNCW improved to 1-2 in five-set matches.

Kiera Kastan collected a season-high 16 kills for the Phoenix, which hit .350 in the match-opening first-set win. Jessica Parker finished with five aces as Elon posted 11 on the day.

The Seahawks return to Hanover Hall next weekend when they host CAA newcomer Campbell beginning on Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. UNCW will also celebrate Volleyball Alumni Weekend on both days.
