Seahawks Eye 2023 XC Schedules

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Four in-season races and the Coastal Athletic Association Championships in Williamsburg, Va., highlight the 2023-24 cross country schedules for UNCW's men's and women's teams.

"We're very excited about the cross country schedule this year," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's fourth-year head coach. "We welcome six newcomers – two men and four women. We were young last year and built on our experiences. We want to build on that momentum this year.

"We start the season with a couple of short courses and then build to the NCAA distances of 6K for the women and 8K for the men. Getting things kick started with cross country is huge for the distance culture. Coach (Jeff) Smith has brought stabilization and a level of success to the event group."

The season kicks off in five weeks with the annual Friday Night Lights opener hosted by conference rival Elon on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023. The women will race a 4K at 8:15 p.m., with the men covering 6K at 8:45 p.m.

One week later, the 3rd Annual UNCW Beach Blast will take place at Olson Park on Friday, Sept. 8, 2023. The women kick off the race in a 5K at 7:30 p.m., with the men covering the same distance at 8 pm.

The third appearance of the new season comes on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, when the Seahawks shoot down to Conway, S.C., to compete in the Chanticleer Challenge hosted by Coastal Carolina. The women kick things off with a 5K race at 5 p.m. followed by the men racing an 8K at 5:45 p.m.

The Seahawks wrap up the regular season by competing in the ECU Pirate Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Lake Kristi in Greenville, N.C. The men will start the day with an 8K at 9:15 a.m. and the women conclude the festivities with a 6K at 10 a.m.

The CAA Championships get under on Friday, Oct. 27, in Williamsburg, Va., with the NCAA Southeast Regionals set for Friday, Nov. 10, 2023, in Spartanburg, S.C., and the NCAA Championships scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, in Charlottesville, Va.
