Seahawks Meet Blue Devils In NCAA Regionals

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team is back in the NCAA Regionals again and this time it's against a familiar foe – Duke's Blue Devils.

The Seahawks, 17-7, and Blue Devils, 20-6, collide at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Ambler Tennis Stadium in one of 16 regional sites around the country.

"Both teams are very similar," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's 16-year head coach. "They're very deep and we pride ourselves on our depth. Our team will do what they do. We are a very competitive group, very fiery and very gritty. On a talent level, we're very comparable.

"Our team loves to battle and loves a good challenge. We don't get intimidated by anybody. We like to play the best teams in the country. These guys are ready to rock."

Coach Mait DuBois and the Seahawks continued their domination of Colonial Athletic Association tennis by sweeping past Elon, 4-2, last weekend at the CAA Championship in Williamsburg, Va. The team lost just one singles match over the three-day period.

UNCW is making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Regionals. The Seahawks stand 1-9 in the tournament, but that one victory came in Durham in 2013 when UNCW upset No. 18 South Carolina, 4-0, on the Ambler courts.

The Blue Devils, the No. 12 seed in the 64-team field, are no strangers to the regionals. Saturday marks the 30th appearance by Duke in the NCAA Tournament and the Blue Devils are serving as a regional host for the 15th time and first time since 2015. Duke, 48-29 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, is 25-3 in NCAA play at home.

UNCW and Duke will be joined by Auburn (17-11) and Cornell (17-6) in the two-day event. No. 22 Auburn and No. 40 Cornell open the regional at 11 a.m. followed by the Seahawks and Blue Devils. The winners of the two matches will face each other on Sunday in the second round at 2 p.m.

Durham is one of 16 host sites. The winner of each one advances to super regional play on May 13-14. Each super regional site will feature two teams playing a single-elimination format. The super regional winners then travel to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., where the eight finalists compete for the national championship on May 18-20.
