UNCW Surges In Second Round To Grab CAA Lead

DATAW ISLAND, S.C. – Patrick Sparks set a UNCW tournament record for low-round score and the Seahawks tied a tournament record for the lowest round as they took command of the Colonial Athletic Association men's golf championships on Monday at the Morgan River/Cotton Dike Course.

The Seahawks, who will carry a 16-stroke lead into the third and final round on Wednesday, tied the conference championship record at 15-under-par for the round. The previous mark of 15-under was set by James Madison during the 2017 championship in Midlothian, Va.
UNCW's second-round score of 273 strokes was a school tournament record, besting the previous record of 281, last equaled in

Drexel and Charleston round out the top three at two and three over through two rounds.

Sparks, a junior, broke UNCW tournament record of 67 set by Payne McLeod and Josh Woodfox in 2013 and last equaled by Patrick Cover in 2016. Sparks, who fashioned seven birdies on the round, also tied his previous low round of 65, set in 2022 at the Wofford Invitational.

Joining Sparks (68-65=133) in the top 10 were freshman Rune Bokeid (73-69=142) and Walker Isley (76-67=143) in fifth and tied for sixth, respectively.

Isley rebounded in the second round to move up 18 spots in the standings following a five-under-par 67 that included an eagle on the second hole and six birdies scattered throughout the round.
Bokeid, meanwhile, fashioned a new career-low round, finishing seven under on Monday. His previous low round was 6, set at the John Burns Intercollegiate in February.

UNCW combined for 22 birdies in the second round.

Sander Akeren will get the third round underway for the Seahawks, who will be paired with Drexel and Charleston. Akeren tees off at 9 a.m.
