Sparks Takes Early Lead At CAA Championship

UNCW sits four back and in second place

DATAW ISLAND, S.C. – UNCW junior Patrick Sparks fashioned five birdies in the opening round to take the early lead after one round of play at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on Sunday at the Morgan River/Cotton Dike Course.

Drexel enters the second round on Monday with a four-stroke lead over the Seahawks for the tournament lead. Defending champion College of Charleston finished the opening round three-over-par and trails Drexel by six shots. William & Mary and Elon round out the top five in the standings.

Sparks played the front nine holes to an even-par 36 but made his move on the back nine where he converted four of those five birdies and finished four-under. Sparks played par 4s three-under for the round.

Freshman teammate Gray Mitchum, who is tied for seventh, posted an even-par round in his championship debut. He carded a one-over 37 on the front nine but rallied on the back nine at one-under.

Rune Bøkeid, another UNCW freshman, is tied for 12th overall at one-over.

The Seahawks are paired with Drexel and Charleston on Tuesday and will tee off at 11:10 a.m.
