Home Runs Power UNCW's Win Over Delaware

Box Score WILMINGTON, N.C. – Home runs from John Newton and Tanner Thach backed the strong effort from starter Jacob Shafer as UNCW knocked off visiting Delaware, 7-3, to win the Colonial Athletic Association series opener on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who lead the conference standings, improved to 22-14 on the season overall and 11-4 in the league. With the road loss, the Blue Hens dropped to 20-18 and 9-7 in the CAA.

Shafer (6-2) picked up the win by going 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He walked three struck out four and recorded eight groundball outs.

Ethan Chenault and Brett Banks combined to retire the final eight batters in a row to close out the game.

He belted his 11th home run of the season in the sixth inning and finished with two runs batted in. Newton also homered and knocked in four. His seventh home run of the season supplied all the runs in a 3-run fifth and broke open a 1-0 game. Croom raised his batting average to .386 with three hits. It was his fourth three-hit game of the season and his 17th multi-hit outing.

Bryce Greenly (2-3) took the loss for the Blue Hens, lasting four-plus innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.

Andrew Amato had two hits to lead the Blue Hens and Tyler Leach hit his fifth home run of the season. His round tripper came in the top of the seventh and cut UNCW's lead to 6-3.

The series continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. start. The game was moved up due to anticipated inclement weather.

How it happened: UNCW got on the board in the first inning on a one-out single by Newton that plated Brock Wills, who led off the inning with a single. Newton's homer in the fifth pushed the lead to 4-0.
