Baseball Preview: Vs. Charlotte in Kannapolis, N.C.

Seahawks and 49ersmeet at Atrium Health Ballpark on Wednesday

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – UNCW takes on Charlotte at Atrium Health Ballpark on Wednesday in the second game of the Cannon Ballers Collegiate Series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

The game will be streamed on CUSA.tv, a premium service, and here (Kannapolis Cannon Ballers - YouTube) for free, but with no play-by-play.

The Seahawks and 49ers are meeting for the first time since 2021 when the then nationally-ranked 49ers earned a series win with a pair of one-run decisions in the final two games at Hayes Stadium. Charlotte leads the series, 14-12.

UNCW (6-6) fought to earn a series split with reigning Ivy League champion Columbia last weekend at Brooks Field. The Seahawks were banked in game one, 15-0, and then dropped a 15-12 decision in game two. UNCW, however, rallied to win game three 15-9 and then scored 11 runs in the eighth inning of game four to win 13-9. Columbia held a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the inning.

Charlotte was swept by nationally-ranked Virginia Tech last weekend in Blacksburg. The 49ers dropped to 5-7 with the sweep.

Tanner Thach, a Seahawk freshman, was named Rookie of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association following another strong weekend at the plate. Thach, who earned the award earlier this season, hit .381 (8-21) in a five-game week for Seahawks against third-ranked Wake Forest and reigning Ivy League champion Columbia. The Belvidere, N.C., native scored five runs and drove in eight on the strength of three doubles and a pair of home runs. In the third game of the Columbia series, he collected a career-high four hits, including two home runs, and tied his career-high with five runs batted in.

The Seahawks open conference play this weekend when they host newcomer Monmouth for three games beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
