Sparks Continues Strong Play, Tied For Ninth

OPELIKA, Ala. – UNCW junior Patrick Sparks is tied for ninth overall at three-under-par after the opening round of the Tiger Invitational by Jason Dufner on Sunday at the Grand National Course.

The Seahawks are tied for 14th overall in the 18-team field.

Southern Mississippi carded a 15-under-par 273 for the first 18 holes and holds a three-stroke lead over seventh-ranked Auburn.

There is a three-way tie for the lead between Paul Conroy (Chattanooga), Brendan Valdes (Auburn) and Robbie Latter (Southern Miss) at five-under.

Sparks opened the round on the back nine and was one under at the turn. He fashioned birdies on the second and seventh holes to finish three-under and enter Monday two strokes off the lead.

The second round tees off Monday at 9 a.m. EST with the Seahawks being paired with North Alabama and Georgia State.
