Softball Series at Stony Brook to Start on Friday

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – With two Colonial Athletic Association sweeps secured, the UNCW softball team continues its league slate on Friday afternoon with a visit to new conference member Stony Brook at the University Field.

The three-game series will now begin with a single game on Friday, Mar. 31, at 2:30 p.m. on FloSoftball. An update on the remainder of the weekend will come following Friday afternoon's game after reevaluation of the weather forecast.

The Seahawks (12-17, 6-3 CAA) make their first trip to the Seawolves' (11-14, 2-6 CAA) home field despite previously playing one another seven times dating back to 2003.

UNCW is coming off a three-game sweep of North Carolina A&T that capped a 15-game March in which the Seahawks swept CAA foes Towson and the Aggies. UNCW also picked up a 6-1 win vs. North Carolina last month for its first victory against a Power Five school in four years.

Two-way star Janel Gamache has been at the heart of the Seahawks' efforts this season. The graduate player batted .341 (15-for-44) with two home runs and drove in seven runs in March. In the circle, Gamache pitched to a microscopic 1.47 ERA in 19.0 innings with a pair of wins.

Gamache's March ERA was second only to sophomore right-hander Kara Hammock, who posted a 4-2 record with a 1.45 mark in 38.2 innings last month. The 6-2 righty pitched three complete games with a shutout and earned a save. Hammock fanned a team-high 38 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .197 average.

Stony Brook earned its first CAA wins with a pair of victories vs. Drexel last weekend after being swept by Long Island rival Hofstra in their league debut in mid-March. The Seawolves beat Seton Hall 4-1 in a mid-week battle on Wednesday.

Senior catcher Corinne Badger is second in the conference with six home runs and has totaled 14 RBI. Senior Ashton Melaas and junior Mia Haynes have accounted for 131 innings for Stony Brook in 2023.

UNCW is back at Boseman Field next Wednesday for a doubleheader vs. Duke at 2 p.m. before greeting another league newcomer in Hampton in the Port City on Apr. 8-9.

WEEKEND NOTES: UNCW is 4-3 all-time vs. Stony Brook … Outfielder Elizabeth Winstead carries a career-long seven-game hitting streak into the weekend … The Seahawks were 8-7 in March … UNCW enters its first weekend of play under incoming Athletics Director Michael Oblinger, whose tenure officially begins on Apr. 1 … UNCW leads the CAA with 74 hits in conference games … The teams last met in 2007 in Miami, Fla. … The Seahawks are in search of their first CAA road win … UNCW has totaled 41 multi-hit games this season, including nine players with three or more hits in a game … The Seahawks are the only CAA team to have two conference sweeps through three weekends.
