Swimming & Diving Jump Into CAA Championships Leads

HAMPTON, Va. – Brooke Knisely and Sam O'Brien swept the 500 Yard Freestyle championships while Courtney Klausen earned her fifth career Colonial Athletic Association Championship diving title as UNCW took the lead in both meets with an impressive night Thursday at the Hampton Aquaplex.

O'Brien, who earned his first 500 Free title, made quick work of the record books as his time of 4:19.02 set school, conference and conference championship records. The conference's all-time mark of 4:19.61 was set by 1988 Olympic bronze medalist Sergio Lopez of American in 1991.

For Knisely, she also defended her conference championship in the 500 Free, posting a season-best time of 4:46.95.

Klausen clinched her second straight 3-meter crown on her last dive. She recorded 290.35 to edge runner-up Erin Murphy (289.25) of Northeastern. The conference title ties her with Jessica Bader (1995-99) for the program lead with five conference diving titles.

The third day of the meet begins at 10 a.m. on Friday with the preliminaries followed by the men's 3-meter dive prelims at 12:30 p.m. The finals session is slated for 6 p.m.
