Badrian, 800 Free Relay Win Gold At CAA Championships

HAMPTON, Va. – Fueled by gold medal efforts from freshman Ethan Badrian in diving and the men's 800 Free Relay, UNCW moved into the early lead on Wednesday at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at the Hampton Aquaplex.

The men lead Towson by 23 points while the Seahawk women are tied for second with Delaware behind defending champion William & Mary.

Badrian, who is making his championship debut, scored a season-high 343.15 points in the finals of the 1-meter dive to win the conference title. Nic Newis was second with 309.50 points and Caleb Brantley took fourth (280.60).

Badrian opened the finals with a score of 58.50 points, but he scored 65.10 points in his fifth dive to seal the first-place finish and the gold medal.

The relay of Jacob Duracinsky, Henderson Louviere, Sam O'Brien and Kenneth Lowe cruised to a gold medal in the 800 Free Relay to close out the afternoon. The relay combined to post a school record and championship record time of 6:23.97.

In the 200 Medley Relay, the Seahawk relay of Victoria Cunningham, Gil Shaw, Reece Alexander and Sarah Olson took second with a time of 1:39.62. It would be the first of two silver medal performances by the women's relays. The 800 Free relay of Maura Schoppa, Brooke Knisely, Sarah Rogillio and Emily Waite fashioned a school-record time of 7:15.17 to hold off William & Mary.

The meet continues Thursday with the preliminaries at 10 a.m. and the finals kicking off at 6 p.m. The women's 3-meter preliminaries began at 12:30 p.m.
