Seahawks Stun No. 12 Kentucky, 80-73

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior guard Trazarien White's 27 point, 10 rebound effort off the bench helped propel the UNCW men's basketball team to a thrilling 80-73 victory over 12th-ranked Kentucky on Saturday at Rupp Arena.

The Seahawks moved to 6-2 this season with their first win over an AP-ranked opponent since 2002. The Wildcats fell to 6-2 this season.

White's game-high 27 points led all scorers. The Mansfield, Texas, native was joined in double figures by guards Donovan Newby (15), Shykeim Phillips (13) and K.J. Jenkins (11).

Kentucky was paced by guard Reed Sheppard's 25 points. Antonio Reeves added 15 while Justin Edwards and Tre Mitchell each contributed 11 markers.

UNCW opened the game with a 13-4 spurt over the first five minutes and led by as many as 14 in the first half before taking a 41-33 advantage into halftime.

The Wildcats came out strong after the intermission, outscoring the Seahawks 25-8 in the first 7:09 of the second half, to flip score to 55-49 in favor of the home team.

White and Newby then took over with 13 of the game's next 14 points to put UNCW in front by six, 62-56, with 8:51 to play.

A pair of free throws by Edwards pulled Kentucky within 76-71 with 27 seconds to go, but Phillips and White both converted two free throws to ice the game in the final moments.

The Seahawks are now idle until they host Montreat on Dec. 10 at 2 p.m.

Notes: Kentucky led for just 4:27 and all that time came in the second half … UNCW's bench, led by White, outscored UK, 46-5 … UNCW held a 40-39 advantage on the boards … UNCW's only other win over a ranked team came in the 2002 NCAA Tournament when it knocked off No. 23 Southern California in the first round, 93-89, in overtime in Sacramento, Calif.
