Women's Basketball Preview: Hampton

WILMINGTON North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball team will play its third road game in its last four contests at 2 p.m. on Sunday when it travels to new Colonial Athletic Association member Hampton.

Tip-off from Hampton's Convocation Center will feature the fourth-ever contest between the Seahawks (3-12, 0-4 CAA) and Pirates (5-9, 2-2 CAA). The new league rivals last met in 2009.

Sunday's game will air on FloHoops with Matthew White on the call while live stats will be available through Sidearm Sports.

UNCW is coming off a narrow last-second loss to Hofstra on Friday night. After graduate guard Carrie Gross nailed the would-be game-winning jumper with three seconds left, the Pride's Rosi Nicholson converted an old-fashioned three-point play with a second on the clock to give Hofstra a 63-62 win.

Gross, a Clinton, Md. native, leads the Seahawks with 13.4 ppg and has averaged 18.5 points over her last two contests. Teammate Lexi Jackson, a junior forward, has picked up a block in nine of her last 10 games.

Hampton fell 67-51 at home to league-leading Drexel on Friday night. The Pirates' top two scorers – Nylah Young (12.2 ppg) and Madison Buford (11.6 ppg) combined for 23 points and four steals, but the Dragons shot 53.3 percent from the floor to remain unbeaten in the conference.

The Seahawks return home next weekend for two games vs. Elon on Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. Sunday tip against another CAA newcomer in Monmouth.
