Seahawks Off To Strong Start At Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – The UNCW women's tennis team won eight matches on the opening day of the Navy Blue and Gold Invitational on Friday at the U.S. Naval Academy.
 
The Seahawks went 5-1 in singles and split six doubles matches at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium.
 
UNCW graduate student Lauren Gish and sophomore Stela Joksimovic won a pair of matches on Friday to reach the semifinals of the A Flight doubles bracket. The pair topped Farleigh Dickinson's Anastasia Lim and Valentina Silva, 6-2, in the Round of 16 and then dispatched William & Mary's Raffaela Alhach and Elisa van Meeteran, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
 
Senior Lauren Robbins, the top seed in D Flight singles, advanced to the semifinals of the bracket with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Villanova's Chloe Floyd. The Raleigh netter will face Farleigh Dickinson's Madeleine Graber in the semis.

"The Seahawks competed well today," said UNCW Head Coach Hans Olsen. "We have a strong focus to stay within our process and we did a good job with that. We are excited to continue to build on today's success."

Play continues all day Saturday in the three-day event, the team's second straight tournament appearance.
