Seahawks Sweep Beach Blast 5K Races

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Kendall Hobbs won her first collegiate race and freshman Luke Kiziah finished second overall as UNCW swept the men's and women's races late Friday in the Beach Blast 5K at Olsen Park.
 
The Seahawk cross country teams, making their second appearance of the new season, overwhelmed Chowan, Mount Olive, N.C. Central and N.C. Wesleyan. Temperatures in the 70s and a slight breeze provided near-perfect conditions for the 37 men and 30 women competing.
 
In the men's race, staged at 7:30 p.m., the Seahawks totaled 27 points, easily beating second place Mount Olive (32 points). Kiziah clocked a personal best time of 15:38 to finish second behind Mount Olive's Tsegay Awan at 15:27. Sophomore Julius Ferguson of UNCW took third place at 15:43 and freshman Sam Bland came in fourth with a 15:44 time.
 
Hobbs, from Beavercreek, Ohio, was UNCW's top women's finisher for the second race in as many outings and clocked an 18:27 time to place first overall. She beat out N.C. Central's Victoria Swepson (18:48) for first place on the women's side. The Seahawks claimed three of the top four finishes for the early-season victory.
 
"It was an awesome team win by the men," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's fourth-year head cross country coach. "When we pack up like we did tonight, it's going to be the result we want. It was all about staying together in the middle of the race and we saw some great finishes.
 
"For the women, this team continues to learn how to run together. We have a lot of different ability levels. Kendall's hard work is paying off. We're so proud of the freshman class and the leadership we have going on with the women's team."
 
The Seahawks continue their regular season slate on Friday, Sept. 16, 2022, by competing in the Adidas XC Challenge hosted by N.C. State in Raleigh.
