Brinker, Spair Collect WGCA Honors

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – A pair of UNCW women's golf student-athletes – Malu Brinker and Deborah Spair – have been recognized as All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) for the 2021-22 academic year.

Brinker and Spair are listed among 1,485 student-athletes across the country who received the prestigious honor. To earn All-American Scholar accolades, a player must compile at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and compete in a minimum of 50 percent of their team's rounds.

"This is a tremendous honor for Malu and Deb after their first year at UNCW," said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. "This is a testament to their hard work, both in the classroom and on the course. They continue a long tradition of Seahawks who have earned this distinction."

Brinker earns the honor following a standout freshman campaign. The Wiesloch, Germany, native carded eight rounds of par or better across seven tournaments last season. Brinker posted three top-10 finishes, including a third-place finish with a 71-74-71=216 tournament score at UNCW's River Landing Classic.

Spair, a Raleigh, N.C., native, receives the All-American Scholar notice after playing in 27 rounds in nine tournaments for the Seahawks. The Memphis transfer capped her first season in the Port City at the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Championships, where she tied for sixth, along with teammate Mallory Fobes, with a season-low 75-71-79=225 mark.

Brinker and Spair join Phu Khine, a 2020-21 recipient, as current Seahawks to earn the national distinction for academic and athletic excellence.
