Croom's Homer Clinches CAA Tourney Berth

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jac Croom's two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth lifted UNCW past Northeastern, 5-4, as the Seahawks clinched both the series win and a Colonial Athletic Association tournament berth on Saturday at Friedman Diamond.

The Seahawks improved to 28-21 with the road win and earned a conference tournament berth with a record of 12-8 in the league. The Huskies, meanwhile, dropped to 26-24-1 and 9-11.

Croom's homer capped a wild final two innings that saw the Huskies take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out, two-run homer off the bat of Jeff Costello. The Seahawks had grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the inning with Noah Bridges capping a two-run rally with an RBI triple with two out.

Ron Evans led UNCW with a pair of hits while Croom belted his sixth homer of the season. Also homering for the Seahawks was Brooks Baldwin in the seventh inning. It was his 10th of the season.

Hunter Hodges earned the win to move to 2-1, retiring all four batters he faced.

Costello finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in while Max Viera added two hits of his own and scored twice.

Jordy Allard (2-2) took the loss in relief for the Huskies.

How it happened: After seeing the Huskies take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth, the Seahawks responded with a pair of runs to retake a 5-4 lead. Ethan Baucom worked a one-out walk and two batters later, following a pop out, Croom crushed a ball to right center for a two-run shot and the lead.

Up next: The Seahawks look to earn a series sweep on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start against the Huskies.
