Diamond Hawks Take Slugfest From Wolfpack

The teams combined for six home runs in the contest

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW snapped a nine-game losing streak against NC State with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth for a wild 13-11 win over the Wolfpack on Tuesday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks pushed their record to 26-21 with the non-conference win while NCSU dropped to 30-16.

Brooks Baldwin had two hits, including his ninth home run of the season, scored twice and knocked in two runs while Taber Mongero belted his sixth homer of the season and knocked in three runs. Chris Thorburn, who also finished with two hits, belted his first career home run in the second inning. Jac Croom scored twice and recorded a pair of hits.

Ethan Chenault (2-5) picked up the win with 2.1 innings of hitless relief while fanning four. Hunter Hodges recorded his seventh save retiring all three hitters he faced in the ninth.

Jacob Cozart held game-high honors with three hits and three runs batted in for the Pack. His fourth home run of the season tied the game at 11-all in the sixth inning. Devonte Brown and Tommy White opened the game with back-to-back home runs.

Garrett Payne (3-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over 4.1 innings out of the bullpen.

How it happened: In the Seahawk eighth inning, Baldwin drew a one-out walk to start the rally. Mongero followed with a single to right center that was misplayed and allowed Baldwin to come all the way around to score the go-ahead run. Ethan Baucom followed with a double down the left field line that scored Mongero to make it a two-run lead.

Inside the box score: The Seahawks made the most of their base runners, stranding just four runners on the night … NCSU stranded 10 … Both teams excelled with RISP, NCSU going 5-10 and UNCW 3-7 … UNCW advanced a base runners 12 times in 18 chances, Wolfpack was 12-22 … The game was played with wins going out to center field at 25 mph.
