UNCW Powers Past Northeastern, 9-2

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Freshman RJ Sales allowed two runs over seven innings and UNCW cranked out 15 hits in a 9-2 win over Northeastern on Friday in Colonial Athletic Association action at Friedman Diamond.

The Seahawks pushed their record to 27-21 overall on the season and 11-8 in the CAA. The Huskies, meanwhile, dropped to 26-23-1 and 9-10 in the conference.

Sales (6-1) scattered six hits, walked four and struck out four in earning the win. Ethan Chenault closed out the game by striking out thee of the seven batters he faced.

Heading up the offense were Ethan Baucom, Jac Croom and Chris Thorburn with three hits apiece. Thorburn drove in three. Matt Suggs grabbed the conference-lead with his 12th home run of the season, coming in the top of the third to dead center field. Ron Evans collected a pair of sacrifice bunts, doubled and knocked in two runs.

JP Olson had three hits for the Huskies, who stranded nine runners on base.

Eric Yost took the loss to slide to 4-3. He allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings of work.

How it happened: Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, Croom singled to open the inning and Dillon Lifrieri moved him into scoring position with a walk. Thorburn followed with a single to left that scored Croom with the tying run. In the third inning, Taber Mongero opened the inning with a single to right and two batters later, Suggs cleared the center field wall, over 400 feet away, for a 3-1 lead.
