Tennis Teams Seek Momentum For Stretch Run

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's and women's tennis teams are fine tuning their games as the curtain closes on the regular season and the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Tennis Championships approach in the coming weeks.

The women's team, 11-4, returns home on Thursday, Apr. 14, at 1 p.m. when South Carolina State visits the UNCW courts. The Seahawks then head to Charleston for a match on Saturday, Apr. 16, before concluding the home schedule on Saturday, Apr. 23, vs. the Cougars in a noon match.

The Seahawks stand 7-2 at home this spring behind strong play in both singles and doubles. UNCW is 54-36 (.600) in doubles and a sparkling 30-13 (.698) in doubles action.

Graduate transfer Lauren Gish (Mooresville, N.C.) leads the team in singles victories with a 9-6 ledger at the top four positions. She joined the Seahawks this season from Vanderbilt and has partnered with another graduate transfer, Sasha Belaya, for an 8-3 record at No. 1 doubles.

"We're looking forward to the final three matches of the season," said UNCW women's head coach Hans Olsen. "Our team is looking for a strong sense of togetherness at home against South Carolina State and finishing up with Charleston."

The men's team, 11-8, carries an 8-2 home record into Friday's regular season finale against South Carolina State at the UNCW Courts. The Seahawks and Bulldogs collide in a 1:30 p.m. match.

The men are 57-39 (.594) in singles and 29-20 (.592) in doubles this spring. Freshman Harold Huens (Waterloo, Belgium) tops the club with 11 singles victories while sophomores Gabe Hurtado (Bogota, Colombia) and Bekhzod Rasamatov (Tushkent, Uzbekistan) each have 10 doubles wins.

Dillon Gooch (Charlotte N.C.) and Rasamatov are the reigning CAA Doubles Team of the Week after knocking off Charleston's Zac Larke and Robby Krick in a convincing 6-1 victory over the Cougars last Saturday at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.

Following Friday's match, the seven-time CAA champions travel to Elon, N.C., on Apr. 21-24, 2022, for the CAA Men's Tennis Championships at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
