Impressive Honors Haul For UNCW Swimming & Diving

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Four Seahawks earned major Colonial Athletic Association honors the league announced on Wednesday after a very strong season from the UNCW swimming and diving programs.

Nic Newis, a freshman, and Courtney Klausen, a junior, were honored as the league's divers of the year while freshman Sam O'Brien and Katie Knorr were recognized the Rookie Swimmers of the Year for the men and women, respectively.

Newis made an immediate impact after joining the program for the Spring semester. Newis won both the 1 and 3-meter boards at the CAA Championships and advanced to the NCAA Zone B Regionals in Atlanta. On the 1-meter he posted a season-best score of 317.20 at the CAA Championships and on the 3-meter he totaled a season-best 312.60 points in a win over Davidson.

Klausen continued her winning ways as a junior, sweeping the CAA diving events for the first time. She had won the 1-meter twice before but captured her first 3-meter gold with a score of 302.10. Her best score in the 3-meter event was 294.08 against Liberty.

On the swimming side, O'Brien shined as a freshman, delivering a sweep of the distance events at the CAA Championships. He won the 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:23.83 and later earned a win in the 1650 Free when he touched the wall in a time of 15:27.16. O'Brien also finished second in the 400 IM with a time 3:52.70.

Knorr earned All-CAA honors in the 200 IM and won the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.72. Knorr set a program record in the 400 IM earlier in the season with a time of 4:17.18.

Head Coach Bobby Guntoro was honored as the Coach of the Year at the conference meet after leading the Seahawk men to their 14th conference title, but their first since 2012.

Diving Coach Beau Bunn was recognized as the league's Diving Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's sides.
