Big Innings Sink Seahawks In CAA Opening Loss

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary struck for six runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth inning to erase a 5-0 deficit to win the Colonial Athletic Association series opener, 13-5, on Friday against UNCW.

The Tribe ran its winning streak to five with the convincing win and to 10-9 on the season. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped to 12-9 and 1-4 on the road.

Mark Trotta and Matt Thomas led four players with two-hit games for the Tribe. Both finished with three runs batted in. The Tribe sent 11 batters to the plate in the six-run fourth inning and batted around again in the five-run fifth.

UNCW managed five hits on the game with Taber Mongero collecting two of them. He led off the game with his second career home run and added an RBI single in the second inning. Matt Suggs had three runs batted in, two coming on triple in the second inning. The Seahawks had a 5-0 lead after two innings.

W&M reliever Matt Howat (2-1) earned the win and was the first of three relievers who combined to blank the Seahawks after the second inning.

Ethan Chenault (1-2) was tagged with the loss.

How it happened: After sending just 10 batters to the plate in the first three innings, the Tribe roughed up, the Tribe exploded for six runs to take the lead. Cole Ragone opened the scoring with a one out home run off UCW starter Brett Banks. Six consecutive hitters reached base following that home run and five scored.

Inside the box score: William & Mary finished with eight two-out RBI's and six hits … Mongero's lead-off homer was the first by a Seahawk since Greg Jones in 2018 against Northeastern in the CAA tournament.
