Seahawks, Pirates Renew Series In Greenville

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW returns to softball action to renew its longtime rivalry with East Carolina for the 97th time at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium in Greenville, N.C. on Wednesday.
 
First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with a booth of Evan Budrovich and Julia Alsbrook on the call. Live stats can be found on UNCWStats.com.
 
The Seahawks (17-4) seek to rebound following a 2-0 setback at North Carolina on Tuesday, Mar. 15. The Pirates (16-11) have won five straight games after sweeping Colonial Athletic Association foe Charleston in three games on Saturday and Sunday.
 
UNCW has fared well recently, winning eight of its previous 10 contests. The Seahawks have hit .308 in the stretch, outscoring opponents, 57-9.
 
Senior pitcher/first baseman Janel Gamache has only added to her historic collegiate career this season. The Exeter, R.I., product leads the team with five home runs and 23 RBI, including a 1.303 OPS in 21 games this year. In the circle, the right-hander has fashioned a 0.82 ERA which ranks 16th in the country.
 
Second baseman Tayler Vitola paces the Seahawks with 28 hits, the second-most in the CAA. The sophomore speedster from Middletown, Del., also tops the team with 12 stolen bases.
 
The Seahawks pitching staff boasts a 1.74 ERA this season, good for 16th in the nation, and has limited opponents to two or fewer runs in 15 games. Freshman Emily Winstead and Kara Hammock have thrown 81 innings with 99 strikeouts.
 
Sophomore right-handers Madisyn Davis and Taylor Smith lead the Pirates in the circle. The duo has tossed 90.1 innings to the tune of a 2.32 ERA paired with 62 strikeouts.
 
The Pirate offense features four batters hitting .300 or better with junior Faith Jarvis' .395 average leading the squad while sophomore outfielder Sydney Yoder's 27 RBI top ECU.
 
Last year, Gamache and Logan Bjorson combined to toss a six-hit shutout to down the Pirates, 1-0, in Wilmington. Gamache tossed six innings with five strikeouts while Bjorson worked a clean seventh to record the save.
 
Wednesday afternoon's affair serves as a final tune-up for UNCW before CAA play begins against Delaware this weekend. The Blue Hens descend into Boseman Field for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 26, at noon followed by a noon game on Sunday, Mar. 27.
