Late Rally Comes Up Short In 9-7 Loss

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Ohio State exploded for six runs, all with two outs, in the top of the eighth and held off UNCW late for a 9-7 win over the Seahawks on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Buckeyes improved to 7-9 with the win and evened the four-game series. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped to 10-7 and 9-4 at home.

Tyler Pettorini had two hits and knocked in three runs to pace the Buckeyes. His two-out single in the eighth inning ignited a six-run frame and rallied OSU from a 4-2 deficit for an 8-4 lead. The Buckeyes were able to take advantage of nine walks issued by UNCW pitchers on the night.

Taber Mongero had two hits, including a two-run double in the ninth as UNCW cut its deficit to 9-7 with three runs.

Ethan Hammerberg (2-1) earned the win out of the bullpen and TJ Brock nailed down his second save of the young season.

Cody Benton (0-2) was the losing pitcher.

How it happened: Benton issued a pair of one-out walks in the eighth inning. A ground ball out moved both runners up and Pettorini followed one batter later and dumped a single into left to score both runners and tie the game. Kade Kern broke the deadlock with double to left that score two more.

Inside the box score: Ohio State finished with six two-out hits and eight two-out RBI's … The Buckeyes landed their leadoff hitter on base in six innings … UNCW turned three double plays.
