Sales, Cota Blank Buckeyes, 2-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – RJ Sales and Bryce Cota combined on a three-hit shutout as UNCW blanked visiting Ohio State, 2-0, on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 11-7 with their third shutout of the season while the Buckeyes slipped to 7-10 with the road loss.

Sales (1-1), a freshman, went a career-long 6.2 innings and allowed just two hits, a pair of walks and struck out four in picking up his first win of the season. Cota, who notched his first save of the season closed out the game, striking out two and allowing one hit over the 2.1 innings.

Offensively, Ron Evans had UNCW's lone run batted in of the game with a second inning single.

Nate Haberthier (0-2) was the hard-luck loser for the Buckeyes despite a complete game effort. Haberthier allowed six hits, two runs, one earned while striking out four. He needed just 92 pitches over his eighth innings.

How it happened: UNCW loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and grabbed the early lead on a double play turned by the Buckeyes. Evans made it 2-0 in the second when he singled in Ethan Baucom, who doubled to open the inning, with one out.

Inside the box score: Sales allowed just two leadoff hitters to reach safely in seven chances … He held OSU hitless with runners on base (0-7) and with two outs (0-6) … OSU was 1-for-10 with two outs on the day and advanced runners just twice … The game was played in 2:11.

Home Runs: none

Up next: The series concludes on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start.
