Baseball Preview: Carolinas Coastline Classic

Ball State, Rutgers and Illinois visit Brooks Field this weekend

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW continues its season-opening eight-game homestand this weekend when they host Ball State, Rutgers and Illinois in the Carolinas Coastline Classic in conjunction with Coastal Carolina.

The tournament will be played out over two sites with Spring-Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C., hosting two games a day, along with Brooks Field.

The Seahawks opened their season with four wins last weekend, beating Middle Tennessee and St. John's each twice. UNCW had to rally in each game and Brooks Baldwin, the Colonial Athletic Association's co-Player of the Week, won the opener with a bottom of the ninth two-run homer against Middle Tennessee.

Three newcomers comprise the UNCW rotation this weekend with sophomore Matt Gaither drawing the start Friday against Ball State. Freshman RJ Sales and red-shirt sophomore Brett Banks will make starts on Saturday against Rutgers and Sunday against Illinois, respectively.

The tournament field includes Ball State, Rutgers, Illinois, Middle Tennessee and co-host Coastal Carolina. BSU split four games last weekend in Charleston, while Rutgers swept Houston Baptist and Illinois lost a neutral-site series to Kansas.

The Seahawks have played Ball State six times and hold a 4-2 lead in the series with the last game being a 4-2 win over the Cardinals in 2015. UNCW has never faced Rutgers or Illinois.
