WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team swept all six singles matches to cruise past state rival UNC Greensboro, 6-1, early Friday at the UNCW Courts.
The Seahawks, 4-2, stayed unbeaten at home (4-0) by rolling in the fourth match of a five-match homestand. The Spartans, 2-3, slipped to 0-2 on the road and 1-3 against state opponents this spring.
UNCG claimed the doubles point to get off to a good start, but UNCW displayed its depth by dominating singles play, going into third sets in just two matches.
Freshman Harold Huens of UNCW evened the score at 1-all with a 6-4, 6-1, rout of UNCG's Roger Rogowski at No. 4 singles and newcomer Trey Mallory gave the Seahawks a 2-1 lead by rallying past UNCG's David Flisberg, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
The Seahawks raised the score to 3-1 with a victory at No. 6 singles. Redshirt sophomore Ignacio Sandoval trimmed Christopher Johns, 6-2, 7-5, setting up the clincher by sophomore Reece Falck, who defeated Hugh Knapp, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 position.
The Seahawks are back in action on Sunday when they entertain Fairfield in a noon match at the UNCW Courts.
