Women's Basketball Preview: Coastal Carolina

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball team travels down the Atlantic coast for a teal-clad contest at Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the HTC Center.

The Seahawks (2-6) will lace their sneakers for the first time in 11 days, the longest lay-off this season, for the tip-off on ESPN+ against the Chanticleers (4-5) in one of UNCW's oldest rivalries dating back to the inaugural 1973-74 season.

Junior forward Lexi Jackson posted her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the Seahawks' 64-42 loss at then-no. 8 North Carolina on Dec. 7. The Kent State transfer became the seventh UNCW player to record at least six blocks in a game.

Sophomore guard Jayde Gamble (10 points) delivered her fourth double-digit scoring effort against the Tar Heels. The Holly Springs, N.C., native has shined in her first season as a starter, averaging 10.4 ppg while leading the Seahawks in steals (18­) and assists (17).

Coastal looks to sweep its three-game homestand after turning back Furman (69-54) and Division II Erskine (83-24) over the past week. The Conway, S.C., based squad is led by the Sun Belt's fourth-leading scorer, Aja Blount (17.3 ppg).

The two schools, separated by only 79 miles, met one year ago in Wilmington with the Chants earning a 73-62 victory over the Seahawks. Graduate students Carrie Gross and Micah Hoggatt each posted 14 points in the Nov. 20, 2021, loss.

Up next, the Seahawks will travel to Cherokee, N.C. to participate in the Cherokee Invitational Showcase against Western Carolina on Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m. The game will take place at Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort.
