Men's Cross Country Joe Browning

Hobbs Paces Seahawks At CAA XC Championships

NEWARK, Del. – Senior Kendall Hobbs set a personal record with a time of 22:24 over the 6K women's course to lead UNCW's runners early Friday at the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at White Clay Creek State Park.

The Seahawks finished in eighth place in both the men's and women's competitions. Elon captured its fourth consecutive women's championship with 30 points, while conference newcomer Stony Brook took the men's crown for its first CAA title since joining the loop on July 1, 2022.

Hobbs, from Beavercreek, Ohio, placed 53rd at last year's meet, but punched her ticket to the NCAA Southeast Regionals by leapfrogging up to 20th place this time around. "Kendall's result today is a testament to her consistent hard work throughout her career," said fourth-year UNCW Head Coach Jeff Klaves. "Collectively, our women continue to show the power of teamwork by reducing the spread from 1-to-5."

Hobbs, the team's top runner in all five races this fall, will compete at the NCAA Southeast Regionals on Nov. 11, 2022, at EP Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.

For UNCW's men competing, Sam Bland, from Matthews, N.C., was the club's top finisher for the third race in a row and the fourth time overall with a 27:44 finish over the 8K course, good for 58th place out of 83 entries.

Northeastern swept the CAA individual titles. Junior Abigail Hassman won the women's championship by turning in a time of 21:12, becoming the first NU runner to win the women's hardware. Graduate student Alexander Korczynski successfully defended his men's championship by clocking a 24:09 time over 8K.

UNCW XC Student-Athlete Comments:

Kendall Hobbs, Senior, Beavercreek, Ohio
"I felt relaxed going into the race and I knew what I wanted to do. I made sure I stayed controlled during the first mile so I had enough energy for all the hills. It was important to use the downhills to your advantage during the race, which I think I did well. I'm happy with my race and placement, and I'm excited to have one more cross country race at the NCAA Regionals."

Gretchen Bingham, Senior, Holly Springs, N.C.
"Our team made me proud today. We've worked so hard for this result. The improvement can be seen by us moving ahead of Hofstra and Towson at the end. I couldn't be happier for my fellow captain, Kendall, and we are excited to cheer her on as she competes at the regionals"

Owen Marish, Sophomore, Collingswood, N.J.
"Our men ran hard and made the best out of a difficult course today. I am so excited about the young talent that was shown throughout this whole season and proving how much potential there really is. We're learning together and ready to conquer anything that comes our way. This is just the beginning."
