Seahawks Tackle CAA Championships Early Friday

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW's young cross country teams head up to the Delmarva Peninsula early Friday to compete in the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at White Clay Creek State Park near Newark.

The men open the competition with an 8K race at 10 a.m., followed by the women covering a 6K layout at 11 a.m. Near-ideal racing conditions are expected, with clear weather and temperatures in the mid 50s ahead on the horizon.

The Seahawks hope to continue a path of improvement established by fourth-year head coach Jeff Klaves when they compete for the fifth time this season.

Junior Kendall Hobbs will lead the six women competing. The Beavercreek, Ohio, runner has been the team's top performer in all four races this fall, including a 13th place finish in last week's ECU Pirate Invitational with a time of 22:35 over the 6K course at Lake Kristi.

The team features one senior, one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen.

On the men's side, all eight Seahawk entries are freshmen. Newcomer Sam Bland has paced the team in three races, while Luke Kiziah was the team's top finisher in the UNCW Beach Blast in early September. Bland came in 29th out of 93 runners in last week's ECU race, clocking a 26:15 on the 8K course in Greenville.

Elon won the women's championship for the third straight year last October behind two-time individual champion Maria Ahm. The Phoenix wound up with 27 points, easily beating host Northeastern at 68.

William & Mary captured the men's crown in 2021 with 28 points. The Tribe has won 28 of the league's 39 championships and 21 of the last 22 titles.

In last year's race at rainy Franklin Park in Boston, the Seahawk women came in ninth place and the men finished sixth. The top-15 finishers in each race on Friday will earn All-CAA honors.
