Seahawks picked 12th in CAA Preseason Poll

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball team was picked to finish 12th and the Seahawks' top returning scorer, Carrie Gross, received individual recognition in the Colonial Athletic Association's Preseason Poll ahead of the 2022-23 season.

The preseason ballot, voted on by the league's head coaches, was announced on Thursday in conjunction with the CAA's conference media day.

Last year's CAA regular season champion Drexel was tabbed the preseason favorite with 10 of 13 first-place votes. Following the Dragons were Charleston, Stony Brook, Elon, Towson, Delaware, William & Mary, Northeastern, North Carolina A&T, Hampton, Monmouth and UNCW. Hofstra was chosen to finish in the cellar.

Gross collected CAA Preseason Honorable Mention distinctions after averaging 9.4 ppg in her first season with the Seahawks. The 5-11 guard recorded 16 double-digit scoring efforts and connected on a team-high 87.3 percent (62-of-71) of her free throw attempts.

The Seahawks will next appear at the annual Midnite Madness festivities on Friday, Oct. 21, at 9 p.m. before hosting Virginia Union in exhibition action on Saturday, Oct. 29.

UNCW opens its 29-game schedule at home on Monday, Nov. 7, vs. Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m.
