Five Facts to Know: Charleston

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball team kicks off a challenging four-game conference road trip early Sunday before returning home in 13 days to play host to Elon.

The Seahawks, 3-12 overall and 0-4 in the CAA, are coming off a 78-69 home defeat Wednesday night to second place Delaware. The Cougars, 10-8 and 2-5, lost only their second road game of the season Wednesday night in an 81-70 setback at Northeastern

Sunday's game at TD Arena will be aired, as usual, on FloHoops.com. Live stats will be available online at UNCWStats.com.

The Seahawks, one of two teams without a conference win, are shooting 36.2 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from long distance and 76.8 percent at the free throw line through 14 games. UNCW stands 1-7 at home and 2-5 on the road this season.

Graduate guard Sierra DaCosta leads the Seahawks in scoring with 14.1 ppg. She has reached double figures in 13 games overall and five straight. The Philadelphia product scored 23 points in the loss to the Blue Hens, one shy of matching her UNCW high.

Senior guard Carrie Gross, who collects 9.9 ppg each contest, continues to excel at the free throw line. She dropped in 4-of-6 vs. Delaware to raise her total to 35-of-39 at the charity stripe, tops in the CAA.

Senior forward Micah Hoggatt is chipping in 9.7 points and 6.3 rebounds after contributing 14 points and five rebounds the last time on the floor.

In Wednesday's loss in Boston, the Cougars trailed, 43-25, at intermission and couldn't rally following the break. Charleston has dropped two in a row and now stands 3-6 at home and 5-2 in true road games this season.

High-scoring junior guard Jenna Annecchiarico filled up the stat sheet for the Cougars, pouring in 32 points, grabbing five rebounds, dishing out four assists and coming up with three steals in Boston. Senior forward Arynn Eady recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Both Annecchiarico and Eady played all 40 minutes against the Huskies.

Annecchiarico anchors four players in double figures for third-year head coach Robin Harmony's club, who are averaging 77.6 ppg and shooting 41 percent from the floor. Peyton Martin (12.7), Anika McGarity (12.1) and Grace Abercrombie (10.2) give Charleston a balanced attack. Abercrombie is a three-time CAA Rookie of the Week selection this season.

"Charleston has a lot of depth and is a pressing team," said Karen Barefoot, UNCW's fifth-year head coach. "They are very athletic, so we'll need to handle their pressure. Execution on offense will also be important. We've played tough against some of the top teams in the conference. We just have to play with confidence, be tougher and believe."

After Sunday's meet-up in Charleston, the Seahawks travel to Hofstra (Feb. 1), Drexel (Feb. 4) and Delaware (Feb. 6) before turning home on Feb. 11 to entertain the Phoenix.
