Five Facts to Know: Delaware

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW wraps up a three-game conference home stand on Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2022) when Delaware's Blue Hens visit Trask Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tip.

The Seahawks, 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association, dropped games to James Madison and Towson in the opening games of three-game set at Trask. Delaware, 10-5 and 4-1, holds down second place in the CAA standings, but had a four-game winning streak snapped at Drexel last Sunday in a 70-62 setback in Philadelphia.

The game will be aired, as usual, on FloHoops.com. John Smist will be on the call, while Marianna Pinto is set to provide reports from the sideline. An audio simulcast may be heard on 95.9 FM The Breeze with live stats online at UNCWStats.com.

"We've been playing well," said fifth-year UNCW head coach Karen Barefoot. "We pushed (first place and undefeated) Drexel to overtime and they're off to their best start in school history. That should give our team some confidence.

"We're inexperienced, but we're hanging in there. We had an opportunity to win the James Madison game. We haven't had many wins, but this team is confident. We're right there. We have a balanced attack and once we put it all together, we're going to be dangerous down the stretch."

The Seahawks are shooting 36.2 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from long distance and 76.8 percent at the free throw line through 14 games. UNCW stands 1-6 at home and 2-5 on the road this season.

Graduate guard Sierra DaCosta continues to have an outstanding season and leads the Seahawks in scoring with 13.5 ppg. Senior guard Carrie Gross ranks second in scoring at 10.2 ppg. Senior guard Micah Hoggatt is chipping in 9.4 points and 6.4 rebounds each contest.

Senior guard/forward Jasmine Dickey, the 2021 CAA Player of the Year and a two-time CAA Player of the Week selection this season, leads the Blue Hens and the CAA in scoring with 24.4 ppg. Sophomore guard Tyi Skinner also ranks ninth in the circuit with 14.0 ppg.

The Blue Hens are a formidable rebounding team behind senior forward Ty Battle, who is grabbing 10.9 caroms each time out. UD ranks second in the loop in rebounding margin at +6.73 on the glass.

"Delaware is an outstanding rebounding team. We're going to have to play really solid defense and give Jasmine Dickey some tough looks," Barefoot added.

The Blue Hens are playing the second leg of a four-game road trip. In the loss at the Daskalakis Center last Saturday, Dickey finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Skinner followed with 17 points (4-of-7 3FG) and three assists while Battle added 13 points and 13 rebounds (seven offensive) to post her 10th double-double of the season.

The Seahawks next open a four-game road trip on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022, with a 2 p.m. tip at Charleston. Coach Karen Barefoot's club then travels to Hofstra, Drexel and Delaware in the challenging road swing.

After Wednesday's clash with the Blue Hens, the next home game for the team is Friday, Feb. 11, vs. Elon at Trask Coliseum.
