Five Facts to Know: Towson

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's basketball team closes out its conference weekend early Sunday with a 1 p.m. test against Towson's Tigers at Trask Coliseum.
 
Sunday's game, the second of three straight home contests for the Seahawks, may be seen online via FloHoops (subscription required), with John Smist calling the action while Marianna Pinto providing reports from the sideline. An audio simulcast can be heard in the Wilmington area on 95.9 FM The Breeze, with live stats online at UNCWStats.com.
 
UNCW, 3-10 overall and 0-3 in the CAA, returned to action on Friday after a 12-day layoff due to Covid-19 protocols.
 
The Seahawks are coming off a heartbreaking 57-56 loss to James Madison early Friday. Sophomore forward Annalicia Goodman converted a layup with 19.5 seconds remaining as the Dukes survived a furious comeback by the Seahawks for a 57-56 decision.
 
Redshirt senior forward Micah Hoggatt picked up her second double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss to the Dukes. Graduate guard Sierra DaCosta chipped in 13 points and senior guard Rinnah Green finished with nine points and five assists.

Towson carries a 12-4 overall record and 3-2 league mark into Sunday's game. The Tigers are in a three-way tie for third place in the league behind unbeatens Drexel and Delaware with James Madison and Northeastern.
 
The Tigers went back and forth with Charleston on Friday before falling, 88-72, to the Cougars. Junior guard Aleah Nelson exploded for 14 points in the fourth quarter, but Charleston scored 31 points in the final 10 minutes to post an 88-72 win. 
 
Nelson, the CAA's fourth leading point producer, and redshirt sophomore guard Kylie Kornegay-Lucas paced the Tigers with 17 points apiece. Kornegay-Lucas also added six assists and seven rebounds. Anissa Rivera joined the pair in double figures with 13 points.
 
The Tigers lead the CAA in defense, holding opponents to just 35.1 percent from the floor through 16 outings. Towson also has a league-high 74 blocked shots.
 
The Seahawks conclude their three-game home stand on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022, with a 7 p.m. tip-off against Delaware's Blue Hens.
 
Five Facts to Know
 
Home Sweet Home |The Seahawks returned to the court on Friday after being idle since dropping a 71-68 overtime decision against Drexel on Jan. 9. The Seahawks, who have played the fewest league games of any CAA team, saw their games at William & Mary and Elon postponed last week due to COVID-19 protocols.
 
Downward Trend |Towson has dropped two straight and three of its last four contests.
 
Common Foe | East Carolina was the only common non-conference opponent for the two clubs. UNCW lost to the Pirates, 79-50, on Dec. 19, 2021, and Towson defeated ECU, 66-51, on Dec. 4, 2021.
 
Magical Micah | Micah Hoggatt reached double digits in scoring for the sixth time in the JMU loss. It also represented the third time in the last four games that she scored in double figures.

Dynamic Duo | Sierra DaCosta, the only Seahawk to start all 13 games, ranks 11th in the CAA in scoring at 13.5 ppg and has 11 double-digit scoring games to her credit. Carrie Gross ranks 23rd in scoring with 10.2 ppg and tops the loop in free throw percentage with a 93.3 percent clip on 28-of-30 attempts.
 
Good Gamble | Freshman guard Jayde Gamble made her first collegiate start in Friday's game and finished with two points and three assists in 16 minutes.
