Seahawks Win Two Events In T&F Indoor Debut

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's indoor track and field team picked up a pair of first place finishes on the opening day of VMI's Keydet Invitational early Friday at the Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Va.
 
The meet, the first of five regular season indoor competitions for the team, concludes Saturday.
 
"Our focus today was about effort," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's third-year track and field head coach. "From start to finish, we were engaged in the process. Tomorrow, it will be about continuing to build on what we learned today. You always need a starting point, so we're going to keep pushing the mark in the direction that we think this team is capable of."

Sophomore Rebekah Smith captured first place in the Women's High Jump with a height of 5-3. Teammate Lauren Taylor joined her on the podium with a jump of 5-1 for third place.

The Distance Medley Relay team, consisting of Alexa Woltjen, Gabrielle Ryan, Gretchen Bingham and Kendall Hobbs, also came in first for UNCW. The quartet clocked a time of 12:53.49.

Klaves said, "Our DMR team has a great performance from start to finish. They used a great final mile from Kendall Hobbs to cap off a team win in the event."

In other action, senior Courtney Lines is the top qualifier for Saturday's final of the 60 Meters after posting a 7.78 time, good enough for eighth all-time on the school's indoor list. Senior Destiny Smith and sophomore Carly Mixon advanced to Saturday's finals in the 60 Meter Hurdles.

In the pole vault, junior Elise Hall cleared 11-11.75 for to place third. The Clemson transfer posted the fourth best mark in school history and qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships on March 4-5, 2022, in Boston.
Senior Tori Whimple recorded a mark of 38-10.50 in the Women's Triple Jump for second place overall. She matched the school record set by Johnique Fonville in 2013.

In addition to the Seahawks, other teams competing include the host Keydets, Bridgewater, Christopher Newport, Columbia International, Concord, George Washington, Marshall, Queens, Radford, UNC Asheville and Washington & Lee.

Following this weekend's meet, the Seahawks next participate in the Liberty Open on Feb. 5, 2022, in Lynchburg, Va.
