Men's Cross Country Joe Browning

Seahawks Finish Sixth, Ninth In Debut

ELON, North Carolina – The UNCW cross country teams finished sixth and ninth overall at the season-opening 2021 "Friday Night Lights" Elon XC Opener late Friday.
 
The Seahawk women's team finished sixth out of 10 teams in the 4K race that started at 8:15 p.m. on the Elon campus. The Seahawk men came in ninth out of 12 entries in the 6K race.
 
Duke swept both races, with the Blue Devils topping host Elon in the women's race and defeating East Carolina on the men's side.
 
In addition to the Seahawks and host Phoenix, the competition featured runners from Campbell, Davidson, Duke, ECU, Guilford, Gardner-Webb, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, UNCG and Winthrop.
 
"We were excited to be back running," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's head cross country coach. "I was so proud of our teams. It was an awesome atmosphere under the lights. It was a super competitive start. It was great to just remember what racing is like. There's so many things that we're going to build on from this meet."
 
Graduate student Summer Owens paced seven Seahawks in the women's race. The Richmond, Va., product came in 30th with a time of 15:03. Duke's Charlotte Tomkinson won the women's event with a 13:32 finish.
 
"It was really good to be back running with the team again," said Owens. "We had some adversity last year with Covid, so it was awesome to work together as a team today. We're looking forward to what the rest of the season has to offer."
 
On the men's side, senior Zeke Shore came in 46th place with a 20:35 time to anchor UNCW's six runners. Campbell's Athanas Kioko took home individual honors in 17:55.
 
"It was great to be back racing with the team," said Shore. "I'm glad everyone here got a chance to show out and prove what we could do. It was a very competitive meet out there today and a great opportunity for all of us."
 
The Seahawk teams next stage their only home event of the season, the UNCW Beach Blast, next Friday, Sept. 10, at Olsen Park.
