Men's Cross Country Joe Browning

Seahawk XC Teams Compete In Boone

BOONE, North Carolina – In their third appearance of the season, the UNCW women's and men's cross country teams finished sixth and eighth at Appalachian State's Fire Tower Project race at the Don Kennedy Fields.

The Seahawks were joined by the host Mountaineers, Charleston, Lees-McRae, UNC Asheville, East Tennessee State, Elon, Montreat and USC Upstate in the meet.

The UNCW women took sixth place with a total of 182 points. Colonial Athletic Association rival Elon won the meet with 28 points after sweeping the top three spots on the women's side.

Graduate student Summer Owens was the top runner for UNCW's women for the third consecutive race, covering the 5K course in 18:49 for 32nd place out of 101 entries. Owens, Kendall Hobbs and Chloe Byrd each recorded personal bests in the race.

In the men's 8K, UNCW came in eighth place and the host Mountaineers claimed first overall. Sophomore Zach Koivisto was the top runner for the Seahawks with a 27:47 time and 43rd out of 83 runners. The Seahawk men have had three different leaders of the pack in as many races this fall.

"It was awesome to have everyone back competing," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's head cross country coach. "Everyone traveled to the meet for the first time.

"I was very happy with the performance on the women's side, with three personal records. On the men's side, Zach Koivisto had a breakthrough race. We know we have some work to do in the 8K. It's a big jump to go up to the 8K and it was a little bit of a shock to the system. We'll be better in a couple weeks when we run our second one of the season."
The Seahawks have an open weekend before traveling to Conway, S.C., for the Chanticleer Invitational on Friday, Oct 1.
