Owens Captures First In Beach Blast

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Graduate student Summer Owens won the women's competition to propel UNCW to the team title and the Seahawk men finished second overall in the 2021 UNCW Beach Blast 5K race late Friday at Olsen Park.

Hosting a regular season home meet for the first time since 2013, the Seahawks claimed five of the first six spots in the women's race for 18 points. N.C. Central finished second with 43 points under ideal running conditions.

On the men's side, N.C. Central came in first place with 35 points, followed by the Seahawks with 40 points.

Owens, from Richmond, Va., clocked a 20:12 time on the flat course for her first college victory. It marked the first team title for the women since the Seahawks won the N.C. Wesleyan Invitational on Feb. 13, 2021.

Sophomore Ethan Gildenberg paced the Seahawk men for the first time in his career, recording a 17:13 time to finish fourth behind N.C. Central's Juan Rodriguez (16:59), Barton's Amando Robes (17:10) and N.C. Central's Leroy Scarver (17:13).

"It was great to have the community and everybody out for the race," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's head coach. "It was huge for our growth and progress. A huge thank you to Colin Hackman of It's Go Time timing for his efforts. It was fun, the environment was right and we look forward to building on this.

"To have a win this early on the women's side means a lot. It was great to see them working together, pack up and really focus on the mentality of reducing our spread from one to seven.

"One the men's side, we had a different plan of holding the pack longer. We did, but unfortunately it allowed a couple runners to get away from us. We weren't able to win the team title, but I'm really proud of the guys for grouping together. We have to take the same mentality into running an 8K next week."

The Seahawks compete for the third consecutive week next weekend when they race in the Firetower Project 8K hosted by Appalachian State on Friday, Sept. 17, in Boone.
