UNCW combined to break six pool records on Saturday

WILMINGTON, N.C. – On a fast and furious opening day of the Colonial Athletic Association pod meet that saw a total of nine pool records go by the wayside, UNCW was responsible for six of those new records on Saturday at the Seahawk Natatorium.

In dual meet action, the Seahawk men lead both William & Mary (192-34) and Delaware (187-51) while the women hold leads over W&M (146-88) and Delaware (168-72), but trails defending CAA champion James Madison, 124-116.

A total of six pool records were broken in the afternoon session with UNCW owning three of the new standards.

The Seahawk relay of Will Barker, Gianmichel D'Alessandro, Henderson Louviere and E'Likai Crompton-English posted a time of 1:29.29 in the 200 Medley Relay to open the afternoon session. D'Alessandro later broke the pool record in the 100 Breaststroke with a mark of 55.33 seconds. Barker rounded out the pool record performances in the afternoon session when he clocked in at 48.72 in winning the 100 Backstroke.

In diving action, freshman Ethan Graff won the 1-meter board with 267.15 points and Caleb Brantley, a sophomore, finished off a sweep by winning the 3-meter dive (237.90). On the women's side, freshman Trinity McNall recorded a pair of fourth place finishes on both boards. Tatum Church, another UNCW freshman, took third on the 1-meter board. Courtney Klausen delivered UNCW's highest finish on the boards, taking second on the 3-meter.

In the morning session, three UNCW records fell in the 1650 Freestyle and a fourth came in the men's 400 Medley Relay. Freshman Sam O'Brien clocked in with a winning time of 15:32.60, eclipsing both the program and pool records. Luke Murphy previously owned the program record with a time of 15:34.62. set in 2009, and Fred Hvidd of American set the previous pool mark of 15:34.05 in 1993 at the CAA Championships.

In the women's side of the even, Brooke Knisely won the event with a pool-record time of 16:50.62, nearly 40 seconds ahead of the field. That time pushed Old Dominion's Yesim Girsemsulu (16:59.70) out of the top spot at the Seahawk Natatorium.

Rounding out the record-breaking performances was UNCW's 400 Medley Relay of Barker, D'Alessandro, Louviere and Kenneth Lowe. The relay combined to post a pool record and winning time of 3:17.26.

UNCW's men's team has won all 11 swimming events.

The meet continues Sunday with a 10 a.m. start at the Seahawk Natatorium.
