XC Teams Wrap Up CAA Championships In Boston

BOSTON, Massachusetts – The UNCW cross country teams battled inclement weather to finish sixth and ninth at the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships early Saturday at historic Franklin Park.

Racing in rainy, muddy conditions, the teams competed in Boston for the first time since 2014.

"I'm proud of the way our teams fought in challenging conditions," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's head cross country coach. "There was a steady rain throughout the races and some muddy spots led to slow downs.

"Times weren't our major focus today. We're excited about the culture and continuing to build the program. Individual student-athletes continue to step up and close the gap on our conference opponents."

The Seahawk men's team came in sixth place with a total of 167 points. William & Mary, which captured its 28th CAA xc championship with 28 points, has claimed 21 of the last 22 titles. Host Northeastern came in second behind the Tribe.

Senior Ezekiel Shore was UNCW's top finisher with a time of 28:19 over the 8K course. The Raleigh product came in 33rd place and was the teams' top runner for the third time in 2021-22.

"Zeke did a tremendous job leading the way," added Klaves. "Our men race a complete race from start to finish. They got out hard in the first mile with the pack. We will build on this race for future conference championships."

The Seahawk women placed ninth in the meet with 244 points. Graduate student Summer Owens crossed the line first for the Seahawks with a 23:52 time on the 6K layout, good enough for 44th place overall.

"Our seniors – Summer, Alexa (Woltjen) and Chloe (Byrd) – are leaving the program in a better place because of their efforts. I'm excited about the future of the women's team."

Elon won the women's championship for the third straight year behind two-time individual champion Maria Ahm.
