Seahawks Finish Fifth, Ninth At ECU Invitational

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – The UNCW women's team placed fifth and the men came in ninth place at the ECU Pirate Cross Country Invitational in Greenville late Friday as the two Seahawk teams tuned up the CAA Championships in two weeks.

The Seahawks competed against American, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Elizabeth City State, Hampton, Louisburg, Meredith, Methodist, N.C. Wesleyan, UNC Greensboro, South Carolina, Virginia State and William Peace on the rolling grass trails at Lake Kristi.

Host ECU took first place out of 12 teams in the women's 6K race with 24 points, followed by UNC Greensboro (45), American (102), South Carolina (106) and UNCW (119). Graduate student Summer Owens clocked a 23:10 time to lead the Seahawks for the fifth time in as many races this fall.

On the men's side, the Seahawks, trying to bounce back from several illnesses, wound up ninth out of 12 teams. Senior Ezekiel Shore paced the squad for the second time with a 28:02 finish on the 8K course.

The spectator-friendly layout served as the host site of the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championships and the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships from 2002-05.

The Seahawks next compete in the CAA XC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021, in Boston.
