Women's Tennis Takes Home Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW swept all 10 matches without surrendering a game to dominate visiting N.C. Central, 7-0, in the women's tennis opener for the Seahawks on Saturday at the UNCW courts.
 
The Seahawks evened their record at 1-1 with the non-conference victory. The Eagles are 0-1 following their spring debut.
 
Senior Maddy Muller-Hughes delivered the match clincher for UNCW with a 6-3, 6-3, triumph over Hannah Gaines at the No. 3 singles position.
 
The Seahawks got off to a strong start by sweeping all three doubles matches. UNCW's No. 3 tandem of senior Rachel Marthinsen and sophomore Anna Daniels cruised past NCCU's Jade Houston and Maria Picazo, 6-2, for help the Seahawks nail down the early point.
 
Charlotte Madson, a graduate transfer from William & Mary, recorded her first singles and doubles victory as a Seahawk. She paired with senior Sarah Horn to win at No. 2 doubles and then routed Houston at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
 
The Seahawks return to the courts on Thursday, Feb. 4, with a 2 p.m. match at regional rival Coastal Carolina. The Eagles head back to Durham to entertain Wofford on Saturday, Feb. 6, in a 1 p.m. match.
