Arsenault Takes CAA 50 Free Title

Seahawk men maintain lead at CAA Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Junior Evan Arsenault's school-record performance in the 50-yard Freestyle on Thursday at the Colonial Athletic Association highlighted a strong night for the UNCW swimming and diving programs.

The Seahawk men continued to hold the lead over defending champion William & Mary while the women are in fifth.

"What a great all-around performance tonight from all areas," said UNCW Head Coach Jason Memont. "Our men were able to hold onto the lead with a lot of time drops from our morning swims that culminated in a fast 200 Free Relay that placed second.

Arsenault clocked in at 22.34 seconds to win the event and topple two-time defending champion Megan Clark of Northeastern. Her time also tied Clark for the 38th best time nationally and was a NCAA B cut qualifier.

Arsenault became the first Seahawk to win the championship since 2013 when Carly Tanner won her second straight championship.

"Our women were led by Evan (Arsenault) and her UNCW record championship performance. We've known for a while that she would break that record and tonight, she swam the perfect race to take the win and the record. It was tremendous to watch."

Freshman Henderson Louviere, meanwhile, finished third in the men's 200 IM with a time of 1:48.78, ranking third all-time at UNCW.

The Seahawks added medal finishes in the 200 Free Relays.

The men's relay of Sean Cannon, Jack Cosgrove, Will Countie and Thomas McGovern fashioned a second-place time of 1:19.38, narrowly missing the program record of 1:19.08.

Cannon added a fifth-place finish in the 50 Free.

The women's relay of Arsenault, Faith Pilcher, Sarah Olson and Hannah Copeland combined to finish third with a time of 1:32.62. James Madison edged the Seahawks for second with a time of 1:32.61.

Freshman Courtney Klausen finished fourth in her championship debut in the 3-meter dive. Her total of 294.35 ranks third all-time and is a UNCW freshman record.

The meet continues Thursday with the preliminaries at 11 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m. The event being contested are the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, men's 3-meter board and the 400 Medley Relay.

"We are all looking to carry this momentum into tomorrow morning, where we have to have better swims to get into those scoring heats."
